Preparing for Tony Robbins’ Unleash The Power Within (Virtual) 2020

Did I mention I am a self development junkie? I love all things related to business and self development. I was originally supposed to attend Tony Robbins’ UPW (Unleash the Power Within) live in August in Dallas but due to the current situation, it was cancelled. Tony and his team decided to take things into their own hands and for the first time ever, Unleash the Power Within was held virtually! That’s right, a 4-day self development event that consists of 13+ hour days… all from the comfort of our own home! Check out the 4 day recap video here.

Tony Robbins UPW Virtual 2020
Tony Robbins in his 360 virtual studio created specifically for this event.

I didn’t quite know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. I think it helped that I went into the experience with zero expectations knowing that there would likely be some technical difficulties considering the event would be held through Zoom with over 20,000 people tuning in live. Tony created a 360 studio to be able to see as many faces as possible to make it feel as interactive as possible, it was really a sight to see. He was able to talk to people face to face and could see who was participating and who wasn’t.

I’ve had the pleasure of attending a UPW in person November of 2018 so I already knew what to expect as far as the content goes. It was nice to still get the boost from the event that I was looking for. I would rate this event a 4/5 only because there was a lot of selling of his other programs but overall great value of content. I especially enjoyed that we were able to talk to each other in breakout sessions with no more than 6 people. During a regular live event, Tony walks us through walking on fire so for this virtual event they sent us a board to break so that we could still break past the limiting beliefs. I thought that was a great way to still achieve the same feeling of break-though.

I did do several things to prepare for this 4 day event, I wanted to share them in case you are considering a virtual conference. I think the prep work I did ahead of time really helped me focus on the event and play full out.

The first thing I did was designate a space in my home for this event. I decided to turn our home media room into my own UPW stage. I made sure that it would allow me to fully immerse myself without any distractions. Even though I was at home, I wanted things to feel like I was there with Tony live. As you can see in the pictures below, I plugged in up-lights which really gave the room a showy feel, it really added to the ambiance.

We also tested the connection between my MacBook Pro and the Apple TV device – this worked flawlessly and I really got a great sound from our surround sound setup in our media room. It really amplified the feeling that I was a part of the event live.

The next thing I did was consider what I would need in front of me. If you have ever been to a Tony Robbins event you know that you are on your feet for long periods of time jumping and dancing so I made sure I had plenty of space to do my thing. I also brought our mini trampoline/rebounder into the room. This rebounder makes it easy to jump all day and it also makes you feel like a kid again. Win-win!

Because the event wasn’t going to be recorded, I didn’t want to miss a thing so I purchased a really cute gallon water jug on Amazon. I loved it because 1) helped me stay hydrated and 2) saved me from having to go up and down the stairs to refill a regular water bottle multiple times per day. Since the event, I have continued to use it because I find it helps me stay hydrated and focused on my work.

The next thing I made sure I did before the event was meal prep! Yep, the days are long and Tony can go for hours without a break. Again, I did not want to miss a thing! I cooked low carb healthy easy to eat meals that wouldn’t weigh me down or make me sleepy.

I also ordered snacks ahead of time, the snacks I chose were nuts (walnuts, pecans, almonds) and smoked sausages. Duke’s hot and spicy are my absolute favorite! These were a great go-to when I needed something to hold me over.

Now, let’s talk about outfits. I wore workout clothes to keep me comfortable and active during the entire 4 days. I highly recommend you wear extra strength deodorant because you WILL get sweaty! The moisture wick workout clothes keep you dry and comfortable.

Blurry but cool action shot of me jumping on the rebounder. I hit over 15k steps!!

Last but certainly not least, I had a conversation with my husband about how I wouldn’t really be available and that he could pretend that I was at an actual out of town event to set expectations. He was super understanding and even cooked me breakfast a few times. So it’s important that you prepare your family members so that you are not interrupted during your training.

The way I see it, you are investing time, money and energy into these virtual events so it’s super important to play full out and do everything in your power to stay focused.

One final BONUS tip: Being in front of a computer or screen for over 13 hours every day for 4 days can strain your eyes and prevent melatonin production. I made sure to wear Swanwick blue light blocking glasses and they were a life saver! They not only make you look cool, they help you get restful sleep at night.

I hope you find these tips useful if you are going to be participating in a similar virtual multi day conference. I believe Tony Robbins is going to be hosting multiple other virtual conferences for the remainder of the year. The next UPW virtual will be in November. I highly recommend you check them out if you have ever been interested after all, you save travel and accommodation costs.
